What is SMUX and SMUX Kayaking?SMUX Kayaking is one of the 7 teams under SMUXtremists (SMUX), a student body in Singapore Management University that serves to promote adventure-based sports and activities to the student community. The SMUX Kayaking team serves to promote water-based, paddle-based sports and activities like kayaking and white water rafting to the SMU community.

Is SMUX Kayaking a CCA?Yes! SLiMs (SMU’s CCA records) would reflect that you are a member if you attend any 3 of our paddle sessions in a year.

I don’t know how to paddle; can I still join kayaking?Definitely! Most of our members start off without any kayaking knowledge and we do have paddle sessions that cater to new paddlers. It would be recommended for you to get your certifications (read more under certification section) to join us for more exciting paddles and journeys!

How much do I have to pay?Our kayaking sessions are free for all SMU students! Payment is only required if you sign up for certification courses, special kayaking events and overseas trips! However, being a SMUX member would provide you with discounts, check out the membership section below!

Do I need to be a SMUX member to join your events?No! Our events are open for all SMU students. For more details about SMUX memberships, please refer to membership section below.

Can I do more than just kayaking?Yes! We would usually recruit organising committee members for our expeditions overseas and some of our other events! Alternatively, you could join us as an Executive Committee member to stretch your planning and organising skills or join the SMUX Crew!

How often do we paddle?We have paddle sessions almost every week, usually on Saturday mornings to early afternoon. Each week’s paddle session would cater to different star-certified kayakers and would rotate every week.

Do I need to attend all your kayaking sessions?It is not compulsory to attend all our kayaking sessions; however, we would love to have you join us for our paddle sessions! Do keep a look out for our email signups every week!

Where and what do we do when we paddle?Among our paddle sessions are Paddle Picnic (PaNic), Skills training session, Paddle expeditions (such as to Pulau Ubin), Mangrove cleaning sessions. Our main paddle areas are at: Kallang River Pasir Ris Beach

Do we go overseas?Yes! Everytime we paddle overseas we term it as an expedition and there are 2 expeditions each semester. Mid-term expeditions are usually done in countries closer to Singapore and have a shorter duration as compared to summer/winter expedition. * Mid-term expedition is usually 2-3 days whereas Summer/Winter expedition is usually 5-6 days.

What are 1* and 2*?Stars (*) are certification levels, awarded by the Singapore Canoe Federation to individuals who have completed the different proficiency levels in Kayaking.

Why should I take up the kayaking certifications?Being certified would allow you to join us for some of our kayaking paddles or events as some of them require up to a 2* certification. Additionally, having a kayaking certificate will also allow you to rent kayaks at water venture outlets. Should you rent from water venture, having 1 Star will restrict your paddling to a demarcated area while having 2 Star will allow you to paddle beyond the demarcated area to places such as Pulau Ubin (provided you move in groups of 3).

How many different levels of certification are there?Although most of our kayaking paddles or events require up to a 2* certification, we encourage you to take the higher level certifications to increase your kayaking skillsets! There are 1* to 5* certification courses, and you will specialise in either sea kayaking or river kayaking from 4* onwards. Currently SMUX Kayaking offers up to 1* and 2* Certification. However, if you are interested in embarking on the 3* Certification, just send an email along our way or talk to our friendly Excos for more information.

I did my Kayaking Certification Course sometime back but I have lost my certificate!As some of our kayaking sessions require star-certification, we would require you to produce your certification for safety reasons. Do check with the organisation you took your star certification course if they have a record of your certificate in their system.

How do I sign up for courses?Look out in your student email for our emailers as we will arrange for kayaking courses! Alternatively, you can visit https://www.onepa.sg/ to search for kayaking courses conducted by Water Venture.

Where and how long are the courses?A 1* course will be 2-day course, usually conducted on Saturday and Sunday of the same week. A 2* course will be 3-days long, usually conducted on Saturday, Sunday and the following Saturday or vice-versa. Each day will typically start at 10am and end by 5pm and include a one-hour lunch (on our own). These courses would usually take place in the Water Venture outlets in Singapore located at Sembawang, Kallang, Changi and Pasir Ris.

What if I can’t make it for some of the course days?To pass the course, you would be required to attend the entire duration of the course. However, Water Venture might accept valid medical certificates and reschedule you for a makeup.

How much are the courses?The courses conducted by Water Venture are priced competitively and are as follows. For 1* courses, PA Member: $64.80, Non-PA Member: $72 For 2* courses, PA Member: $78.30, Non-PA Member: $87.30 For more information on becoming a PA member, please check out membership section below.

What is a SMUX member?As a SMUX member, SLiMs would reflect you as a member of SMUX. Valued at $25, the SMUX membership also allows you access to a range of benefits.

What are the benefits of being a SMUX member?Many! 1. Collection of SMUX welfare packages held throughout the year 2. $10 member’s discount for all SMUX ticket events, such as overseas trips and special events 3. Complimentary rental and use of SMUX equipment, such as kayaks, bicycles and skates, subjected to approval by the team. 4. Activities within SMUX are recorded and place in to SLiMs.

How much is a PA membership?$12 for five-year membership and each sign up is usually accompanied by a free-gift, while stock lasts.
