On the 26th to 28th of February 2018, 11 Participants joined the

SMUX Kayaking and SMUX XSeed Team on our Mid Term collaboration trip “GoPeng or GoHome”. As the name suggests, we departed for Gopeng Perak, Malaysia for a 3Days & 2Nights trip where we did Whitewater Rafting and Waterfall Abseiling!

The team gathered at 8am on the 26th of February where we had a chartered bus (the party bus) waiting for us at SMU, ready to bring us to our destination in Gopeng Perak which was a 10hours bus ride away. Skipping the boring details of clearing customs and the long bus ride, we finally arrived in Gopeng at 7pm. We ended the day by heading to Aeon Kinta City Mall where we tried the local KFC and bought some supplies back to our Airbnb which was a spacious 2 storey landed property.

White Water Rafting was the first on our list. The moment we stepped into the river we were greeted with the cold waters of the Kampar River which was rather refreshing given the heat.

Before we started paddling away, we learnt some important safety aspects such as learning how to float in the river safely; which was especially crucial if we were to capsize.

After which we got onto the rafts and started paddling away. There was plenty of action going on as we spun around and attacked the rapids head on. We felt our adrenaline pumping as we plunged from rapids to rapids and capsized a couple of times; the first being totally unexpected and really caught us off guard.

We took a short break in between and using the raft as a stage for a battle, the guides got

us going in a 1 v 1 battle to push your opponent off the raft, where we had a lot of fun seeing our friends flying off the raft and into the cold waters. We also had the opportunity to try being a raft guide which was a very interesting experience. We ended the White-Water Rafting and had a scrumptious meal after having spent our whole morning in the waters.

Abseiling was next on the list. After a short and very bumpy lorry ride, we reached our destination, Ulu Geruntum Falls. The gushing waters from the waterfall along with the cold mist in the air was a sight to behold. There were 2 different lanes we could choose to abseil from.

One had stronger currents and you can feel the water beating down on your legs as you abseiled down, as you try to avert your eyes from the water that seemed to be trying to engulf you. While the other one was slightly gentler and the water current was not as strong making it an easier and enjoyable abseil experience. Some of us abseiled as much as 4 times down the 5-meter high waterfall.

We woke up bright and early the next day, even before the sun was up, at 5am and made our way back to Singapore, reaching SMU safely at 1.40pm. With good weather and company, GoPeng or GoHome will definitely be one to remember.
